Telehealth research project is launched
A WEST Yorkshire-based research and development organisation has been chosen to lead a £1.5m research project to develop a telehealth consultation system for the NHS.
The Advanced Digital Institute (ADI), based in Saltaire, will put together a TV-based video telephony solution in conjunction with a number of partners including Bradford-based Red Embedded Design and e-learning experts BTL.

This is an exciting project which will change the way patients receive care in the home while also providing numerous economic and social benefits
The innovative new technology will revolutionise the way patients will be able to receive advice and support by providing direct ‘live’ communication with experts from the comfort of their own homes. It will also help doctors and carers talk to patients, reducing the number of people who have to travel to and from hospitals and other health facilities.

Once put together, the system will initially be deployed by the Airedale NHS Trust before being rolled out to other NHS organisations.

John Eaglesham, chief executive of ADI, said: “This is an exciting project which will change the way patients receive care in the home while also providing numerous economic and social benefits.”

The research project will involve further development of existing technology to provide a highly interactive consultation experience for the patient and doctor, including cameras with zoom and pan controls and connection to a streaming video server providing information clips to patients.

The initiative is being supported with funding from the UK Technology Strategy Board under its Assisted Living Innovation Platform.

Commenting on the research, Jackie Marshall-Cyrus, the UK Technology Strategy Board’s assisted living specialist, said: “Through the Assisted Living Innovation Platform we are investing in the development of technology-based solutions that address health and care challenges caused by the welcome impact of people living longer and the increased demand this brings.

“Once developed, the system will have the potential to bring social and economic benefits to the UK and could be used around the world.”
