1,000th deployment of Electronic Patient Records takes place in Leicester
THE introduction of Electronic Patient Records (EPR) across the primary care sector is seen as a key step in the process of modernising the NHS.
And this week it was announced that provider, CSC, has installed its 1,000th system as part of the NHS National Programme for IT.

The milestone deployment took place at the Broadhurst Street Medical Practice in Leicester, enabling GPs to share clinical information through a single record.
This is a great example of how technology can provide better, safer and more-effective care for patients. It will ensure people have to tell their story just once and support healthcare professionals by storing all relevant information on a patient safely and securely
Called SystmOne and developed by TPP, the software is available under the Local Service Provider contract to all GP practices across the North, Midlands and East of England, supporting the NHS’s vision to centre care around patients rather than organisations. Enabling collaborative working across all primary care settings, the shared patient record contains a full medical history and provides GPs with decision support, giving patients more confidence that informed decisions are being made about their care.

Commenting on the implementation, Dr Simon Freeman, director of information and corporate performance for NHS Leicester City and NHS Leicester County and Rutland, said: “This is a great example of how technology can provide better, safer and more-effective care for patients. It will ensure people have to tell their story just once and support healthcare professionals by storing all relevant information on a patient safely and securely.”

The benefits of the system are genuinely helping to transform the experience of care patients receive across the NHS
Under the new system, patient records are accessible in real time to authorised users with a legitimate clinical relationship to the patient. As a centrally-hosted solution, data is stored in a secure data centre with a business continuity and disaster recovery capability that safeguards against data loss in the event of fire, flood or other disruptions.

Now supporting more than 14 million patients in England – about a quarter of the population – CSC’s system covers 47,000 users carrying out more than 1.2 million patient consultations a month.

Designed in consultation with clinicians, the solution has been developed over 10 years and is the only integrated primary care solution deployed to such a scale.

Gerry O’Keeffe, vice president of CSC’s UK healthcare business, said: “Reaching 1,000 GP practice implementations is a key achievement for us in delivering the objectives of the NHS’s National Programme for IT, which are to ‘deliver the right information to the right person at the right time’.

“The benefits of the system are genuinely helping to transform the experience of care patients receive across the NHS.”
