Healthcare IT: News in brief
Welcome to our new weekly round-up of healthcare IT deployments and solutions launches, giving you the chance to keep up to date with what is going on in the sector. The latest news will be posted on the site every Wednesday

IT improvements are a key priority for health services

Bringing health records to life
HD Clinical has launched a new-generation, web-based information system for bringing integrated health records to life. The Solus solution provides tracking, reporting and access to information that other systems do not have the facilities to allow. In addition, it interfaces to medical data sources and devices across a range of clinical activities, with images, waveforms, numeric data and reports integrated into the clinical record with links to PACS, RIS, pathology, PAS, clinical information portals and other applications. The system includes Solus Enterprise, the core structure on which all other functions are based and operate; and Solus Stroke, the first clinical module handling acute stroke management. A spokesman for HD Clinical said: “We have a proven track record with products installed in more than 110 NHS trusts, Northern Ireland Health Boards and in the Republic of Ireland. As a major innovator in the field of integrated clinical records and clinical audit, the company currently has products in place covering a wide range of specialties which are fully compliant with national data reporting requirements and have been extensively tried and tested in live environments. Extensive audit and backup capability means data is held safely and securely, providing an excellent alternative to the holding of paper records.”

IT firm launches global healthcare division
SECURE user access specialist, Imprivata, has announced the launch of a new global healthcare division aimed at building on work it has carried out in more than 500 hospitals worldwide. Omar Hussain, president and chief executive of the company, which specialises in helping to make patient data easily accessible through electronic medical records, said: “Healthcare organisations are facing a confluence of trends and regulations that are driving change across the entire industry. However, providing optimum patient care remains the constant priority. Built upon nearly a decade of healthcare industry expertise, our global healthcare division is focused on quickly delivering innovations to a fast-moving market. We want to be the strategic choice for hospitals that demand seamless patient information across complicated clinical workflows while ensuring patient privacy, compliance and new regulatory mandates.” The firm’s leading solution is Imprivata OneSign, a flagship single sign-on authentication system. Dr Micheal Westcott, chief executive of client, Alegent Health, said: “Facilitating clinical workflows without compromising security has never been more challenging. With Imprivata’s authentication management and SSO capabilities, we have fast access to patient health information and are able to make data available throughout clinician workflows, whether using a shared workstation or roaming across our hospitals. The result is a more-efficient environment that leads to improved quality of patient care and outcomes.”

Solution helps with stroke diagnosis

Siemens' new software application, syngo Neuro PBV IR, will help with stroke care

WITH NHS trusts striving to improve treatment options for stroke sufferers, Siemens Healthcare has launched a new software application to enable the study of cerebral blood flow in the brain. Aimed at helping neuroradiologists, the syngo Neuro PBV IR allows the visualisation of parenchymal blood flow, showing the condition of the cerebral tissue directly in the angio suite. The application is linked to Siemens’ Artis zee system for interventional radiology and cardiology and will enable clinicians to check blood flow during minimally-invasive surgery. “Approximately 110,000 people suffer from stroke every year, making it the third-biggest cause of death in the UK. Time is vital in stroke care and the earlier the condition is treated, the larger the chance that as little brain tissue as possible is destroyed. Our new application for stroke treatment assists in speeding up minimally-invasive procedures to ensure the patient receives the fastest and most-effective treatment.” By displaying the current condition of cerebral tissue, the solution helps in the accurate guidance of the catheter and is also used for tumour biopsy and treatment, tissue embolisation and vasospasm therapy. Unlike traditional CT acquisition, the model also provides blood volume data for the whole brain, allowing review from any orientation.

Laboratory information management made easier
INFORMATION management within laboratories just got easier with the launch of LabVantage’s new SAPPHIRE Release 5.1. A zero-footprint configurable off-the-shelf laboratory information management suite that consolidates functionality typically found in multiple laboratory systems, SAPPHIRE is tailored to managing information across its R&D pipeline and manufacturing supply chain. “The R 5.1 release represents another critical milestone in product innovation for enterprise laboratory informatics, further expanding SAPPHIRE’s functionality to support operations in the clinical space,” said David Ciabattoni, senior director of software development at LabVantage. “This is also aligned with our development philosophy – to continuously broaden the spectrum of SAPPHIRE’s functional features on a powerful, pure thin-client technology platform to create an enhanced, modern end-user experience.”
